Description
ND Manchester, Benjamin Lang, Victoria Musical Gallery, Brass Ticket. W.797
A nice example of this mid 19th century brass token. One of several types produced by two different makers, this one by S Hiron of Birmingham. Benjamin Lang ran the Victoria Music Saloon at the Trafford Arms at the top of Deansgate, next to Victoria Bridge. He lost his public house licence in 1843 but obtained a beerseller’s licence and continued to run the music hall for another twenty years. Lightly worn and well detailed with some original colour remaining.
O: VICTORIA HOUSE around Queen Victoria within wreath and trophy of musical instruments, HIRON below.
R: BENJN LANG / VICTORIA / MUSICAL / GALLERY / NEAR / MANCHESTER OLD CHURCH.
Listed in Withers, Token Book 3 as W.797 and in Davis & Waters, Tickets & Passes of Great Britain & Ireland as D&W 90/337. I would grade this medal Good Very Fine (Sheldon AU53), but I have provided high-resolution close up photos so you can decide on a grade for yourself.
For uncertified coins I provide a grading opinion using both the UK descriptive system and the Sheldon scale (based on ANA Grading Standards and/or PCGS Photograde) which will be better known to my US customers. I offer a grading opinion as a courtesy, but please examine the high resolution close up photos carefully and decide on a grade for yourself.
