Description

ND, Lancashire, Bolton, T Sharples Concert Room Brass Token, D&W 51/62, W.643

A nice example of this scarce nineteenth century token seldom found in such high grade. Thomas Sharples opened a concert-room at the Millstone Inn in 1832. This was one of the first such concert venues in the UK. In 1840 he moved to the Star Inn. Well struck and lustrous. Presented with old collector’s envelope (with annotated fourpence purchase price).

O: T. SHARPLES CONCERT ROOM AND MUSEUM STAR INN CHURCHGATE BOLTON in seven lines with ornaments above, below and at sides.
R: A seven-pointed star within inner circle; olive wreath around.
E: Reeded.

This token is listed in Withers, The Token Book 3 as W.643 and in Davis & Waters, Tickets & Passes of Great Britain & Ireland as D&W 51/62. I would grade this token Extremely Fine (Sheldon AU58) but I have provided high-resolution close up photos so you can decide on a grade for yourself.

For uncertified coins I provide a grading opinion using both the UK descriptive system and the Sheldon scale (based on ANA Grading Standards and/or PCGS Photograde) which will be better known to my US customers. I offer a grading opinion as a courtesy, but please examine the high resolution close up photos carefully and decide on a grade for yourself.
