Description
1808 East India Co, Madras Presidency, AE 10 Cash, KM.320, Admiral Gardner Wreck
A nice example of this copper coin struck for the East India Company at Matthew Boulton’s Soho Mint. The Admiral Gardner was on its sixth voyage for the East India Company when it sank on Goodwin Sands in the English Channel with the loss of all hands and its cargo of around 46 tons of newly struck 10 and 20 cash coins which were packed in barrels filled with wax. The coins remained untouched for nearly 200 years until approximately 28,000 were salvaged in 1985. This coin is a nice example which is reasonably well detailed but has surface issues consistent with being a shipwreck recovery coin.
O: Coat of arms of the East India Company. EAST INDIA COMPANY. 1808.
R: ده کس دو فلوس است X. CASH.
