Description
Celtic, Durotriges, 58-45 BC, AR Stater, Cranborne Chase Type, Spread Tail Variety, S 366, ABC 2166, VA 2138
A nice example of a rare variety of this popular Celtic type. Worn but well detailed. Clearly shows extra pellets on obverse and spread tail on reverse. Weight 4.00g. Van Ardsell notes that the additional obverse pellets do not appear on all examples of what he classes a “Very Rare” variety.
O: Devolved head of Apollo right. Two pellets above curve of spike.
R: Disjointed horse left; pellets above, pellet below. Three strands of tail spread apart.
