Description

18th Century Evasion Halfpenny, George Washington/North Wales, A.132, G.0120/N.0190

A rather worn example of this very popular non-regal evasion halfpenny. An enigmatic type which was probably produced by Lutwyche in Birmingham and likely intended to circulate in the fledgling United States. In order for the pieces to gain an immediate acceptance these were deliberately made to look as if they were old and worn. They were softly struck from a broken and clashed obverse die that imparted a bit of an abused appearance at the outset and it is said they were boiled in oil to add to the effect. Weight 5.86g.

O: GEORGEIVS WASHINGTON, bust of George Washington left.
R: NORTH WALES, harp between two stars.

I would grade this piece Good (Sheldon VG8). I have provided high-resolution close up photos so you can decide on a grade for yourself.

For uncertified coins I provide a grading opinion using both the UK descriptive system and the Sheldon scale (based on ANA Grading Standards and/or PCGS Photograde) which will be better known to my US customers. I offer a grading opinion as a courtesy, but please examine the high resolution close up photos carefully and decide on a grade for yourself.
