Description
1805 Ireland Penny, Countermarked G & J BUTLER, Scott N/L
A nice countermarked Irish halfpenny. Obverse and reverse are countermarked G & J BUTLER. The 1825 directory lists G(eorge) & J(ames) Butler as knife manufacturers and cutlery dealers in Trinity Street, Sheffield.
This countermark is unlisted in Scott, British Countermarks On Copper & Bronze Coins. I would grade the host Poor (Sheldon AG3) and countermark Fine (Sheldon VF20). I have provided high-resolution close up photos so you can decide on a grade for yourself.
