Description

1788 “Union”, Friendly Society Copper Membership Token, Withers -,D&W-, M.5759

A nice example of this rare and enigmatic 18th century token from an unknown location, and about which very little is known. It has been surmised that this is a membership ticket or token for a friendly society or other fraternal organisation. It has also been suggested that this is a United States medalet commemorating ratification of the U.S. Constitution by 9 states in 1788.

Unlisted by Withers or Davis & Waters, it is listed as British in Mitchiner, Jetons, Medalets and Tokens, Volume 3, where it is Mitchiner 5759. Lightly worn and well detailed with a couple of edge bruises. Diameter 25mm. Weight 5.32g.

For uncertified coins I provide a grading opinion using both the UK descriptive system and the Sheldon scale (based on ANA Grading Standards and/or PCGS Photograde) which will be better known to my US customers. I offer a grading opinion as a courtesy, but please examine the high resolution close up photos carefully and decide on a grade for yourself.
